PHILOSOPHY OF COMMONWEALTH INSTITUTE OF FUNERAL SERVICE

The philosophy of education and learning at the Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service is grounded in the Socratic ideal of “education simply for the sake of education.” The faculty and administration of Commonwealth endorse this philosophy and to that end, view all course work and laboratory experiences as of equal value and importance, in order to maintain an ongoing level of accomplishment as to the Institute’s mission, purpose and objectives. Primary to the philosophical foundation of the Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service is a genuine love of the funeral profession. It is the academic ideal of the Commonwealth Institute through dedicated work, devotion, and commitment to our students that this philosophy is communicated.

PURPOSE OF THE INSTITUTE—The reason for why the organization exists.

The Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service is a vocational, post secondary teaching institution with its primary purpose being to educate individuals interested in the subjects comprising the mortuary arts and sciences curriculum as set out by the American Board of Funeral Service Education for licensure and a career in funeral service, embalming, or both.


MISSION-What the Commonwealth Institute intends to do?

The mission of the Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service is to prepare students for entry level positions in the funeral service profession. The Institute accomplishes this mission through offering the Associate of Applied Science Degree and the Certificate in Funeral Directing. The Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service has fulfilled this mission since 1936 and will continue to do so in the future.

OBJECTIVES- How we will fulfill the mission?

1. To instill in Commonwealth Institute of Funeral Service students the fact that education is a lifelong and evolving experience.

2. To prepare students for scholarship in work and service to others, in caretaking of the dead and care-giving to the living in bereavement.

3. To assist students in making mature decisions concerning a career in the funeral service profession.

4. To provide learning processes that encourage a student to achieve his/her potential in the funeral service profession.

5. To assist in developing students confidence and capabilities in the delivery of funeral services to a community.

6. To promote the ethical responsibility of the student.

7. To cultivate and nurture the special talents of students, particularly in the laboratory setting.

8. To help each student find solutions to problems.

9. To help each student prepare for licensing and certification examinations.

10. To encourage student’s mutual respect and understanding for a socially diverse student community.

11. To encourage students to continue their education and to furnish continuing education courses to the funeral community at large.

12. To furnish a variety of a practical, hands-on clinical embalming experiences.

13. To furnish a variety of restorative art and cosmetizing experiences.

14. To promote the use of the Institute’s library and learning resources and the website database accesses.

15. To provide teaching and instructional programs that develop a basic entry level foundation for the funeral service profession and periodically enhance these courses and programs to stay abreast of the future trends of the profession.

16. To provide a faculty and staff that is interested, caring, supportive, and nurturing in assisting students to succeed in their career hopes and dreams.

17. To provide and maintain a first class, state of art, educational facility that is safe, clean, adequate and conducive to a good learning experience.

18. To arrange the curriculum in a logical sequence of order.

19. To provide and maintain fiscal responsibility.

20. To administer financial aid programs for students who qualify.
